Mary Ann Bevan billed as the ‘World’s Ugliest Woman’ has changed the definition of beauty, sacrificing dignity for her children.
Born in London in 1874, she was a single mother and worked hard to support her family with her physical ailments.
Due to hardship in life, she decided to put up her dignity for the children’s sake, entering a “homeliest woman” contest for the prize money and won.
Following the event, she was known as the “World’s Ugliest Woman.” Subsequently, Mary Ann worked as a circus attraction and toured the United Kingdom before departing for the United States. The lady passed away in 1933.
Recently, a doctor flipping through greeting cards came across one that poked fun at Mary Ann for the rare genetic abnormality.
While she was criticized in her own time, Bevan has become an inspirational figure who changed the definition of who’s beautiful and who's not.
